The Rotary Club of McHenry - Sunrise is entirely comprised of professionals and citizens in our community who volunteer their time and money to benefit others. The Rotary motto is Service Above Self, which all members strive to exemplify at all times.
Since our club began meeting in early 2010, our members have helped to complete a number of service projects.
We have collected donations of food and money for the McHenry F.I.S.H. Food Pantry. The pantry is most often in need of paper goods and personal products; so we are organized a drive for those items in March 2011.
Many members stood outside in the cold and the rain around a Northern Illinois Food Bank truck in the parking lot of the McHenry Township Center to distribute food and household supplies to local residents in need, who were standing in a long line - also outside in the cold and the rain - to await their share. The experience for Rotarians and other volunteers that day was humbling and emotional yet gratifying to be a small part of helping so many.
We participated in clean-up efforts along Boone Creek.
We collected donations for The Home of the Sparrow.
We wrapped Toys for Tots donations in time for 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 for Christmas delivery.
Some members participated in organizing a Pros Bowl for Brandon to benefit a 14-year-old boy suffering from leukemia and his family.
Our club organized the St. Patrick's Day Parade in March 2012, 2013 and 2014. The purpose of this annual parade is to feature the many volunteers clubs, groups, and organizations in our town. The day's events included a Shamrock 5K Shuffle to raise funds for both Rotary clubs in McHenry and the aforementioned paper-goods and personal-products drive for FISH.
Our club has grown so quickly because each of us was looking for a timely, affordable, and organized way to give back to the community that has given so much to us. Our members of all ages, professions, and levels of experience bring an energy and vitality to fuel our club goal of completing at least 12 service projects every year. While we certainly realize intrinsic rewards in helping others, we do what we do simply due to a sense of social responsibility.
